North Central Mississippi Resource Conservation and Development, Inc. (NC MS RC&D) is one of (7) seven councils forming the Mississippi Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils (MARDCD). RC&D helps to develop our natural and human resources for community improvements. North Central MS RC&D provides assistance to the following counties: Benton, DeSoto, Lafayette, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Tate, Tippah, Union and Yalobusha. Projects and activities meet goals and objectives identified by a Council made up of representatives from each of the 10 counties. Funds and technical assistance are solicited from local, state and federal agencies as well as organizations, foundations and corporations. RC&D is a program of local people determining their own needs, creating their own solutions to improve their quality of life and standard of living. Review the panel to the left for resource areas being addressed in North Central Mississippi. RC&D provides assistance to local groups, organizations and sponsors, such as Soil & Water Conservation Districts, County Boards of Supervisors, Chambers of Commerce and Financial Institutions. To carry out the RC&D concept, diverse groups of local volunteers are brought together in a peerless partnership to find solutions to their problems. Local people are best able to determine needs and create solutions for their community. North Central Resource Conservation and Development council is a unique program, which helps people care for and protect their natural resources by improving the area’s economy, environment, and standards. It provides a way for people to work together in planning and carrying out activities to make their area a better place in which to live. WE CAN MAKE THINGS HAPPEN! There is a place for you in the RC&D program. You can make a difference by becoming a volunteer to help local RC&D "make things happen." People from all walks of life are getting involved and you can join them.
AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES The Mississippi Legislature officially recognized that our soil resources were deteriorating at an enormous rate. The cause was misuse, or improper use, of the land and the lack of applied conservation treatment or measures. It further recognized that if this were allowed to continue, the results would be a disaster. In its effort to solve the problem, which was primarily soil erosion, the legislature enacted the Soil Conservation Law and made provisions whereby each county could organize a soil and water conservation district. FOREST RESOURCE The aim of forestry is to grow the most valuable timber crop according to the soil type, in the shortest time, and to covert this timber into the greatest amount of cash. All areas of forest growth, whether young or old, merchantable or unmerchantable, require constant protection if they are to fully serve the multiple purposes to which they are suited. This holds true, regardless of whether the primary objective of management is timber production, watershed protection, erosion control, game management, or recreational use. It is also applicable to farm forest areas. The council promotes forest management on these lands by increasing the application of forestry practices available from state, federal, industry or consultant foresters. Holly Springs National Forest, U.S. Forest Service Mississippi Forestry Commission Benton & Tippah Counties Tate & DeSoto Counties Lafayette County Union County Marshall County Panola County Pontotoc County Yalobusha County As a timberland owner, you are a vital part of Mississippi’s economic future because 70 percent of our state’s forestland is privately owned. Unfortunately, only 10 percent of these lands are producing their potential timber growth. Through forest management, we could increase the productivity of these lands and greatly expand our economic base and also create many new jobs. We can promote forest management on these lands by increasing the application of forestry practices available from forestry consultants.

Here are the steep rock formations, tall hills covered with thick vegetation, waterfalls, and places of great tranquil beauty. Here also is Mississippi’s "Great Lakes" – those hugh reservoirs, which create hundreds of miles of shoreline, marvelous fishing opportunities, endless acres for water skiing and boating, and some of the best duck hunting land in the world. Mississippi’s lakes and hills contain state parks. Several of these parks are on the shores of the reservoirs and offer facilities for all types of camping and cottages for group gatherings. Most of all it is a land of quiet beauty, sweeping views of forested valleys, sharp jagged ridges and rocky slopes and wide blue lakes. Holly Springs and Oxford are towns located in Mississippi where major civil war battles were fought. The lovely old homes in these towns also attract many visitors.
